My First Primitive Bow

This is the first primitive bow I ever made and it is far less than the quality that would be expected from an effective hunting bow. The arrows are practice arrows not designed to do anything more than fly however when I came to this palm oasis in the desert and saw the clusters of palm fruit high in the trees I had the idea of using this simple bow and arrows to knock down fresh fruit, plus it was a good opportunity to test the accuracy of the bow and arrows.

The bow is made from a branch of willow tree. The bowstring is made of Mojave yucca. The arrows are made of several materials including cattail stems and giant cane along with accessory materials of bird feathers and pine pitch glue.

The California fan palm is the only native palm tree in California and its distribution is limited to desert oases and spring fed desert canyons in southern California and northern Baja California. It produces fruit in the fall that is both edible and tasty.
