Primitive Mormon Tea from Ephedra Stems

Many species of Ephedra grow in different parts of the world. Ephedrine is extracted mostly from Ephedra sinica in China and is used as a weight-loss supplement, energy and athletic enhancer, and a cold suppressant. Ephedra californica, also known as “Mormon tea”, has been shown to only contain trace amounts of pseudoephedrine. In this video I harvest fresh stems of Ephedra californica in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. A few days later I return to my hut and prepare Mormon tea at my primitive kitchen.
