Top Fire Steel Tinders | Fire Series Pt 4

Testing several tinders for Ferro Rod work and also demonstrating a specific charring method for lighting stubborn tinders that would not otherwise catch fire by dropping sparks down from above.

WARNING:
In this video you’ll see a knife blade being used on a ferro rod. We know this will be offensive to some viewers. Please know that no harm came to the knife, its handlers, or the universe as a result of using a knife blade on a ferro rod. 😉

This knife has been used for this exact purpose for over 50 years and has been set apart as our dedicated ferro rod striker. It’s the greatest ferro rod striker we’ve ever used by far. It rarely dulls, and on the very rare occasion that it does, it is easily and quickly resharpened to be as good as new. Again, the primary job of this knife is to produce incredible spark on a ferro rod while also providing the specific finesse and control needed to perform the charring method which involves controlled placement of the sparks without displacing the tinder. It is not our primary wood working knife although after all these years and thousands of strikes it could easily perform that task (and often does). After decades of ferro rod work we have still never handled a striker that can provide the control, finesse, and great spark of this knife blade.

We are not recommending that everyone use their knife blades. We are aware that the spine of the knife is recommended by most and we practice that as well. We have simply made the choice to take this one specific knife (which does not have a suitable spine) and give it the designated task of producing incredible spark and making fires for us which it has done for half of a century with no signs of slowing down.
