Overnight Camp in a Cave with Kent Survival. Whole Chicken in a Kazan Pressure Cooker. Viking Beer.

In this video, I am out on a very exciting overnight camp in an abandoned 16th century cave house with Andy from Kent Survival. After our hike to the location, we spend some time exploring the cave, prepare firewood for our campfire and prepare dinner for the evening – whole roast chicken and vegetables cooked in a Kazan Afghan pressure cooker. Dinner, a couple of good beers and lots of laughs around the campfire and its time for bed – simple bivvy bags on the cave floor.

The cave is believed to have been inhabited by the infamous Shropshire highwayman Humphrey ‘the wild’ Kynaston before he moved to the much more well known cave house at Nesscliffe in the early 1500s. The cave has been home to many others since and its last occupants, a family of 5, vacated the cave in 1890.

The cave is privately owned and its location is a closely guarded secret. As a result of this, it has remained undamaged by visitors and associated graffiti and is in pretty much original condition, deteriorating naturally as nature slowly reclaims the cliff in which it was dug. The nooks, the chisel marks, the fireplace all remain including the built extension next to the cave, with its roof, although long since collapsed, is still there – rafters, tiles, bricks, sandstone blocks and 500 years of rich history.

I would like to thank the land owners for granting us kind permission to visit and an enjoy the cave for the night and to my friends George and Rachel for organising the visit – thank you!

I hope you enjoy the video.

Thanks for watching.
