Exploring Ogof Ffynnon Ddu Abandoned Ruins & Caves #myfavoritetrail

I did some exploring of the ruins at Ogof Ffynnon Ddu nature reserve in what remains of the village of Penwyllt. Once home to an impressive array of abandoned brick factories, quarries, mines and train tracks. Some of the pools in the area look sub tropical but its probably due to the lime they were using and would be very toxic. It’s now mostly returned back to nature and is home to the deepest caves in Great Britain.
I was tagged by Tea in Valhalla to show my favourite trail and here it is. It was started in the USA hence the American spelt hashtag 😅

Ogof Ffynnon Ddu is linked to Craig Y Nos Castle by the once world famous opera singer Adelina Patti. She paid to have the train station built here for pedestrian travel. You may have also heard of the Patti Pavilion in Swansea which originally stood in the Craig Y Nos Castle gardens.

Penwyllt can be found at the top end of the Swansea valley, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons national park. Just follow the brown signs for Dan-yr-Ogof caves until you reach the village of Penycae. After that there’s a small inconspicuous sign leading you to the right. You head up a steep hill and step foot into another world.
