The Toothache Tree’s leaves and bark can be utilized as a strong local numbing agent and antibacterial drug. The Tree goes by several names including; Tingle Tongue, Hercules’ club, pepperwood, or the southern prickly ash.

The Tree elicits a numbness of the mouth, teeth, and tongue induced by the chewing of its leaves or bark. The tree has been historically used for medicinal purposes by both Native Americans and early settlers.
