Good Cop, Bad Cop: What I Learned from My Dad About Hidden History

Can a person be a hero and a villain? What’s the hidden story? How can we help our students embrace complexity and gain understanding? In this video, a teacher uses her own family history to explore police brutality, institutional racism, and the power of narrative.

About Alisa
Alisa fell in love with history as a young girl, reading stories of the Oregon Trail. Studying her family tree and conducting oral history interviews with friends and relatives also deepened her interest in the past. After graduating with her B.A. in History from Willamette University, Alisa went on to teach history and chair the Social Studies department at Sunset High School in Beaverton, OR. Alisa lives in Portland with her husband Bill and nine-year-old daughter Frances.
