Close Call: Hand Drill Ember in the Rain

It was an especially rainy day and I was seeking cover under a big western hemlock and doing my best to shield the ember with my back, but just as I finished drilling, a big rain drop slammed down right into the barely smoldering pile.

The set was pre-dried yucca in a host spindle on western red cedar. I used the lazy man’s tinder bundle and dropped the ember into my tin of charred punkwood to get a flame.
