Installing Huge and Heavy Ridge Pole by HAND! | Off Grid Cabin! | New Homestead Tractor Ep5

We start off the small off grid cabin build by collecting more timber for lumber to build the roof structure (vaulted ceiling), steeply pitched roof to create the loft area of the cabin. This will be the second floor of the small off-grid cabin in the woods. We are now working on the outhouse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j1N5TOmBLI

No modern scaffolding or cranes involved, but we don’t shy away from using power tools, tractors, winches, chainsaws or whatever else will free us from overwork. We sometimes even use hand tools! The Suzuki is a huge log puller until we fire up the tractor!

Next we move in our huge pine ridge pole that will hold up the rest of the ceiling and covered front porch. The loft is from ash and we put it up in the attic in order to have a place to work from as we raise the roof of the cabin. The decking is framing in with cedar to help it weather the water better since it will be in contact with it a lot of the time.

The cabin will end up being a launch point where we can get closer to nature and pursue wilderness living.

In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin.

We’ll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.

Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

In episode 1, we dig in our “foundation” from reclaimed pressure treated 6×6 posts, level, and set the lower foundation in place which will then accept the first floor of the cabin.
