Knife Making – Making A Large Drop Point Knife

Knife making for beginners. In this video I show how to make a knife with common tools. How to make a knife with lots of detail.

Sometimes things don’t always go as planned. Even though the knife didn’t turn out its still a usage tool. Education is priceless, especially in knife making.
I Use a 1.5 Inch piece of 1080 steel (its my steel of choice for knife making due to its incredible ease of heat treating). I draw out a design on the steel and cut it to shape with an angle grinder and bench grinder. Next I use my sander to grind the knife blank flat and refine the knife design.
Next I grind the bevels using a bevel jig for my 4×36. A 4×36 isn’t recommended for knife making but it can work as seen here. I then file out a sharpening choil. Next I heat treat the knife In my DIY mini forge. And temper it in my home oven. I put hickory scales on the knife using West systems G-Flex epoxy. Then shape the scales using sandpaper.
The knife looks nice on the surface but it still has a minor warp and the bevels are off at the tip of the blade. None of this impacts function. I was able to chop through a 2×4 and some small oak pieces, and batoned through a bunch of oak firewood. The blade still shaved. Hopefully this video inspires you to start knife making. Its a great hobby that doesn’t require a lot of fancy tools. Thanks for watching😁
