North Island Pig Hunting at Night.

I have always loved hunting but pig hunting in particular ever since I was a boy. I don’t do much night hunting as it is hard to film and my dogs seem to do better with early morning and late evening hunts. This hunting video is one of the rare night hunts that I have filmed. Dog and knife wild pig hunting is a big part of our hunting culture in New Zealand. An important meat harvesting tradition that many a young hunter boy or girl cut their teeth on with the help of learning from the older hunters. Hunters not only provide organic free-range meat for their families and loved ones but also play a vital role in keeping pig numbers at a healthy sustainable level in our environment as there is no natural predation on wild pigs in NZ other than mankind. Wild pigs are very destructive to our ecosystem and our agriculture killing lambs, destroying pastures and crops. Pigs are omnivorous and thus feeding on everything from birds eggs, tree roots, shellfish, dead livestock, grass, and all human-grade food. In fact, there are not many things pigs that don’t eat. They also eat a reasonable amount of dirt with their diet of roots.
