One Species Friction Fire Challenge – Grand Fir

This was a challenge from a member on the Bushcraft USA forums. The object is to make a sustainable fire by friction using only one species for as many parts as you can. In this case, Grand Fir (Abies grandis). The hearth, spindle, bearing block, and coal catcher were all from the same dead sapling. The cordage was braided split withies from a live sapling. Grand fir sap was used to lubricate the bearing block and punky sawdust from the inner bark of a dead fir help boost the ember and tinder bundle.
