Painful Encounters: The Bark Scorpion

Demonstrating the effects of a Bark Scorpion sting. I’ve heard a great deal of misinformation concerning the bark scorpion in various circles and thought I’d put the heated debate to a rest with this demonstration.

(No animals were harmed in the making of this video.)

Note: DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS! This is a positively identified bark scorpion and as an avid outdoorsman I have had many encounters with accidental stings occurring from time to time… I’ve made this video knowing how my body reacts to this creature’s venom while still making available an EPI Pen and transport to a medical facility if need be.

Thousands of people are stung each year by the bark scorpion. While a sting from the bark scorpion is very rarely deadly, it is painful and can cause localized swelling. Neurotoxins in the venom can also cause paresthesia and muscle spasms, while more severe cases have resulted in a more intense hypersensitive reactions characterized by symptoms like angioedema, abdominal cramping, chest tightness, flushing, lightheadedness, a large localized reaction, nausea and vomiting, syncope, shortness of breath, urticarial, wheezing and in severe cases, anaphylactic shock. Several studies have revealed that the bark scorpion’s venom is composed of multiple proteins which serve as allergens to the human body.

While a bark scorpion’s sting is not typically deadly, and signs like swelling can be treated using an ice pack, several other species from the genus Centruroides can have a deadly sting and medical attention should be sought immediately.
