Safe Primitive Prickly Pear Harvest

Opuntia (prickly pear) cactus is a genus of cacti native to the Americas. Small spines or glochids grow in small clusters on the fruits and pads. These spines readily get stuck in human skin and are very irritating especially when they get on the lips or mouth. Therefore care must be taken when harvesting prickly pears. A simple way to remove the spines is to place the harvested fruit in the hot flames of a campfire to burn off the glochids. Then the fruit can be rinsed off in water and safely cut open to eat the tasty red flesh inside.
