I use a custom built Amish made fish spear to take wild carp from the river. The fish spear is supplied by Clancy Outdoors: https://clancysoutdoors.com/shop/ice-fishing-spears/

In order to spear fish you need to match location with the tool being used. We are targeting freshwater common carp in the spring season when they are preparing to spawn. This is when their guard has dropped. Carp will spawn in temperatures above 45F-75F.

In all we spent over 2 weeks chasing carp, most of the time spent making mistake and learning from them. Taking carp, let along with primitive gear, is a challenge.
