The Bird Box Movie (FAN FICTION!) | Fire, Water, Food, Blindfolded

This is FAN FICTION, not meant to be imitated of the famous ‘bird box challenge’ inspired by Netflix movie staring Sandra Bullock. This is fiction, not an instructional video, it is being done in a controlled environment, under supervision of trained professionals. Like all movies, things done in them, are unsafe and should not to be attempted in real life.

This is not just a gag, this is an experiment in self reliance in a survival challenge – a time of crisis. Could you get food, water, shelter, and fire if you couldn’t see anymore?

I use my wit in the challenge to overcome lack of vision due to a blindfold to procure shelter, safety, food and water in a mock survival challenge in the woods.

There is no talking, this is 100% natural sounds.

Bird Box Synopsis: When a mysterious force decimates the population, only one thing is certain — if you see it, you die. The survivors must now avoid coming face to face with an entity that takes the form of their worst fears. Searching for hope and a new beginning, a woman and her children embark on a dangerous journey through the woods and down a river to find the one place that may offer sanctuary. To make it, they’ll have to cover their eyes from the evil that chases them — and complete the trip blindfolded.

I will navigate the forest using the terrain or hearing. Open spaces sound different than closed spaces and moving downhill, rather than uphill brings you closer to water.

Making fire using a primitive bow drill is especially challenging because one must have muscle memory in place to understand how and where to hold the drill, how long to run the spindle and how much pressure is needed to create friction. It is nearly impossible to tell when an ember is formed, so I simply counted to 30 as that tells me that I should be nearly there.

Moving the ember from the paper to the tinder bundle is another very challenging thing to do while being blindfolded. It’s also tricky to know when your bundle is fully lit.

Moving in the forest is easier, the more you do it, however, I found that I would tend to travel in a small circle and disorient quickly. I had to pull the blindfold down after each take, but would miss my mark very often. This was especially hard doing it by myself and using a tripod to hold the camera.
